Dr Katherine Birt’s approach and expertise

Dr Katherine Birt is registered as a Psychologist (Clinical) with AHPRA. Katherine has over 10 years of clinical experience, predominantly working with autistic adults. Katherine exclusively works with autistic adults who identify as women or as gender-diverse, reflecting her specialised interest and extensive experience in this area.

Katherine strongly believes that a nuanced and gender-informed understanding of autism is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective support planning.

Autistic female and gender-diverse individuals are frequently under-identified or misdiagnosed - often because their presentation includes high verbal ability, internalised distress, and a tendency to camouflage or mask their differences. Katherine recognises the emotional and cognitive effort involved in masking and compensatory strategies.

Through a neuroaffirming, trauma-informed approach, Katherine aims to provide clarity and validation for each individual's unique experience. Her assessments are designed to recognise the impact of masking, and to offer practical, personalised recommendations that support more sustainable ways of functioning. Katherine provides tailored guidance and advocates for therapeutic supports, accommodations, and services that align with each person’s needs and long-term wellbeing.
